Embarking on the collegiate journey is a line to setting sail on a vast and uncharted sea. As you step onto the campus grounds, a myriad of possibilities, challenges, and discoveries await. College life is a transformative odyssey, a period of growth, self-discovery, and the forging of lifelong connections. In this blog post, we'll explore the multifaceted landscape of being a college student, delving into the highs, lows, and the invaluable lessons learned along the way.

Navigating Life as a Freshman

Navigating life as a freshman. Let’s see this can be a little tricky. There are so many parts to this, but we are going to touch on moving away from home, college compared to high school, making friends, story times, and lastly, some advice we recommend you carry all four years. Talking about moving away from home depending on who you are could be very easy or very hard. Moving in general is a lot however moving away from your parents and starting to do things completely on your own is another story. You start to realize that you are googling everything and don’t know the answers others expect you to have so you’re caught sending your mom a message about cooking an egg.

Some questions we have here are comparing the worst and best parts of it all, were there any realizations you had not having parents right there for you- I know some of you guys aren’t too far from home here the average is maybe an hour but they’re not in the next room anymore.

Next is how college is different compared to high school. The homework load, making your own schedule, and choosing your major which might be the scariest thing you have to do. Being told to wake up to be able to determine if you’re going to class is very different because the second the snow starts to fall, I was in bed. How was the transition for you?

Now the most important question because this is basically the only reason we are in college, kiddingggg, how was it making friends, getting out of your comfort zone, talking to classmates. What was the easiest way to make friends for you and keep them around because another topic is there is a difference between party friends and true friends. This topic could be hard just because there is a lot of change in your freshman year, and nothing will stay constant but what is the best way to make friends and learn what you like to do for fun.

Taking a short break from advice, I know hearing something juicy like a crazy story is in the mind. What is the funniest thing that has happened to you or crazy, keeping it PG the floor is yours..

Wrapping it up, what is the most important advice you must share that was learned, shared to you, or just from your wise experience.

Embrace the chaos, cherish the moments, and remember that it's okay to laugh at yourself when you accidentally show up to class in your pajamas. Because before you know it, you'll be ordering that cap and gown, wondering how you ever survived that first year of college like us. Maybe one day, you'll be the one sharing your freshman year escapades with excited freshmen, bringing smiles and laughter as they embark on their own unforgettable journey. After all, that's what making memories in college is all about!

So here's to freshman year, the year that flies by in the blink of an eye but leaves you with a treasure of memories that will last a lifetime.

Navigating the Night Out

A night out with the Cardinals consists of many different parts of the night, every minute containing core college memories. Put yourself out there and have fun you’re only young once so let's get into it.

The Pregame:

Energy and Hydration: Eating and drinking water before going out is a big key before going out.

Dress to Impress, or Don’t: Whether you are trying to impress a boy or just yourself, do whatever makes you comfortable. It's not that deep so don’t stress if you look great. Wear your frat shoes, people are going to step on your shoes and drinks will get spilled so don’t wear shoes that you care about. Heels? At your college bar? I mean I wouldn’t, but you do you.

Pace Yourself: Yes, have a few beverages before you go out to save some money, but this is not a sprint it is a marathon, do not put down a whole bottle in the hour before you leave because you will not make it out.

The Uber:

Do NOT Drive: Whether you are Ubering, walking, or getting a ride from a friend there is never a reason to drink and drive.

Best Part of the Night: Some of the best memories come from the walk to the bar, you are a few drinks deep from the pregame and walking with all your best friends to the bar cracking jokes and making memories to tell each other the next morning. Always be the friend group that talks to the Uber driver, from experience, the passengers think it is hilarious when they get to have a conversation with a stranger.

The Destination:

Order a Drink: Stick to one form of alcohol, never mix. Your body will thank you in the morning

Be Social: Meeting new people is one of the best parts of the night. Talking to strangers, and having weird conversations, it is all worth it when you look back and one of the strangers you met on a night out is now one of your best friends.

Pacing Yourself:Know your limits, don’t hold on to the same drink all night but do not spend your whole paycheck at your college bar.

Your Alter Ego: We all have a different side to us when drinking, let it out and have some fun

Letting Loose:This is the perfect time to bust out your signature dance moves, even if you can’t dance just let loose and have some fun, no one's watching.

After the Party:

DD: Order that uber, call a friend, or walk if the weather permits.

After Care: Drink some water when you get home and a slice of bread, you’ll wake up in the morning with some crumbs in your bed but you’ll feel a lot better if you hydrate and have something to eat.

The Morning Debrief

Hangxiety: Thinking about the embarrassing things you did last night only you are thinking about, so don’t think too hard, you’re fine you survived the night and that’s all that matters. You might have sent a few texts to a few people that you probably shouldn’t have but don’t stress it, it’s fine and you’ll forget about it in a few days.

Alright cardinals, now that you know how to survive a night out in Muncie, get out there, be safe, and have fun. College is the best four years of your life, and you’ll look back on these memories for the rest of your life. Chirp chirp!!

Tailgating Tactics

I will be diving deep into the pulse of college tailgating. Here is what I will uncover. The secrets of tailgating during two of Ball State University’s most electrifying events: Parents Weekend and Homecoming. Tailgating isn’t just a pre-game ritual; it’s an art, a culture, and a community celebration. For students, these events offer a chance to showcase their campus pride, connect with fellow cardinals, and create unforgettable memories.

Tailgating, a beloved American tradition, plays a significant role during these occasions. If you are a student trying to navigate the world of tailgating during these events, you’re in the right place. So, fellow cardinals, buckle up because we are about to unravel the ultimate guide on how to make the most out of tailgating at Ball State!

Setting the Stage: Ball State Spirit

Before we dive into the tailgating tactics, let’s talk about the heart and soul of these events: the Ball State spirit. Tailgating is not just about food and drinks. It is also an opportunity to showcase your school spirit. Deck out your tailgating spot with Ball State banners, flags, and school colors. The more spirited your setup, the more inviting it will be to fellow students and alumni.

Plan Ahead:

The key to a successful tailgating experience is preparation. Coordinate with your friends and decide on a meeting point. Plan your menu, games, and activities in advance. Make a checklist of essential items such as a portable grill, cooler, beverages, and comfortable seating.

Weathering the Elements: Cardinal Style

Indiana weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for all scenarios. Bring along a pop-up tent or canopy to provide shade from the sun or shelter from the rain. Cardinal-branded rain ponchos and blankets can be both functional and fashionable, ensuring you’re prepared for any weather curveballs.

Balancing Act:

While tailgating is a highlight, don’t forget to balance your time. Explore the campus, show your parents and friends your favorite spots, and participate in other university activities. These events offer a well-rounded experience of what it means to be a Cardinal.

Capture the Memories:

Parents weekend and Homecoming are times to cherish with your friends and family. Capture the moments by taking plenty of photos and videos. Consider creating a shared digital album where everyone can contribute their photos. These memories will be a source of joy and laughter long after the events have ended.

Tailgating during Parents Weekend and Homecoming at Ball State University is not just an event; it's an experience. By planning ahead, embracing the Cardinal spirit, respecting your surroundings, and capturing the moments, you can navigate these tailgating adventures with style. So, gear up, get ready, and get ready to create memories that will last a lifetime. This is your time, your campus, and your community – let’s make it unforgettable!
